Pros & Cons of Research

Primary Research- (Otherwise known as Field Research) Is the gathering of new information in a way like a: Survey or getting people in to do a Focus group. They are forms of primary research because of how all of the information would be new and opinion based towards each of those people who are doing the Surveys or their involvement in the Focus groups. In addition the primary research done by that person is their own found research and wouldn’t of been found from any other form of secondary research.

Pros of Primary Research:

  • It’s new information that was done by you.
  • You can aim questions directly at your research objective
  • Help you find the latest information from the marketplace
  • Can assess the psychology of the customer

Cons of Primary Research:

  • Would be expensive (cost about £10,000 per survey)
  • There’s a risk of the questionnaire and interviewer being bias
  • Research findings may only be usable if comparable back data exists
  • Could be very time consuming

Secondary Research- (Otherwise known as Desk Research) Is when a person or amount of people is doing research on something of which has already had original forms of primary research that was done by other people. A type of secondary research is the internet, newspapers or company reports.

Pro’s of Secondary Research:

  • It’s often obtained without or low cost
  • Helps you get a good overview of a market
  • The research is usually based on actual sale figures, or research on large samples

Con’s of Secondary Research:

  • The data on the source may not be updated regularly
  • The research is not tailored to your own needs
  • Is expensive to buy reports on many different marketplaces
  • May take a while to find the wanted information for the specific research objective that’s wanted

I did my own research along with my own knowledge to gain more of an understanding of the pros and cons of the research. This website called https://www.askwillonline.com/2011/04/pros-and-cons-of-primary-and-secondary.html helped me with my research.

Quantitative Data- Is data that can be expressed in the form of numbers as it would be counted and measured to help with your research. An example of the forms of Quantitative data is the amount of people or money that would be involved in the research as it would help the research in the future when it is wanted to be proven right.

Qualitative Data- Is data that can be arranged into categories based on certain traits. gender, colours or anything that does not have a number associated with it.
