Code and Conventions

Code- systems of signs that when put together create meaning.

Conventions- generally accepted methods of doing something.

These two terms are used in games to create certain genre and it shows how these terms give the game certain features in their game play or their character types. Like for example in FPS ( First Person Shooter) games there are many features that you, as the player, expect like for there to be two weapons, Story Cut scenes, Linear levels and ‘corridor’ shooting and others features like that.

There are also forms of Code and Conventions in media. Like for how they create certain genres like rom-com, Adventure, Action and Sci-Fi. You can tell quite easily what certain genres many movies are as of how a lot of films that come under the same genre have many signs that hint at the films genre. For example look at this movie cover.

The genre of this film is action, I can tell that because of how there are a lot of forms of weaponry as that gives off a hint that there’s going to be a lot of destruction and mayhem as of how all action films have guns that cause deaths. In addition the colour scheme of the picture has more hints towards destruction as of how there’s fire and destroyed structures in the background. Also there are no signs of love related features like if the picture had people of opposite, or the same gender with the look of the picture having a lot of red in it of which represents romance as seen in the picture below.

Code and Conventions in the Games Industry

When thinking about Code and Conventions in the gaming industry it is heavily thought about through the games life when being created. The reason I say that is because when thinking about a games conventions when being created it needs to be relevant to the market and the consumers needs to make sure that the game is up to date with the relevant features that are included in video games to when the game is going to be released. For example every single creator of their game need to make sure that their product will be accepted and played when released, as of how the creators need to think about the games relevance in about three years time as that’s roughly how long it would take the developers to create their game.

Many games expectations rise dramatically with the market and customers of the games always wanting new and improved games with more high tech and largely beneficial features like a games quality with how a lot of games are having to adjust and improve to the new quality of 4K. As of how the quality over the past two years has drastically improved from 1080p to 4K. That means that the game developers have more pressure inventing their games to the accepted degree to be played and earn the developers profit. With those features constantly being updated that is one of many valid reasons to why prices have increased in the cost of the games.

One method that the game developers use to predict their games relevance at its release is by looking at the market in its previous years to see how successful their game would be at its release.
